Honestly, I can't believe what I saw in the previews of SC2. At first I was awestruck by its seemingly smooth gameplay and impeccable graphics, but at second glance, I noticed something that really bothered me. The protoss, who have had many units regeared, replaced, created, and deleted struck me as disturbing. Why you may ask? Because the design is cliche. If you don't see my point, the lead designer from SC2 was the lead designer on Command and Conquer 3 i believe, and the similarities between the two are striking. Honestly, what half assed rts doesn't have a mothership or 3-4 legged walker?

Well, you need to consider the history of the Protoss and how much they had to change thier technology ever since Aiur's grand fleet of old was thrashed.

They did that with the transition from Wc2 to wc3.

They're not really. Dragoons are walking photon cannons pretty much. Aren't photon cannons now like laser fire? When did they explain why that change was made, something I missed?

Phase cannons are almost the exact same, except each attack the middle comes up, fires and comes down, and they are able to teleport short distances within a pylons power.

There arn't any three legged walkers in SC, and all of them particularily the immortal and stalker been based on the design of the dragoon, albeit with obvious upgrades.

I'm not trying to argue with you, I'm just pointing out that the units that protoss have changed to have a striking similarity to the Red Alert 2 units. Further, the photon cannon was a unique turret only found in starcraft; a laser cannon is cliche.

and like I said, they don't fire lazers, they have the same attack.

You do realize that in Starcraft the Zerg were major rip-offs of the Aliens from Aliens, and Starship troopers, as were the marines and Goliaths from every known science fiction source post-Heinlen. They didn't even hide the fact that Cerebrates looked exactly like Brain Bugs from Starship Trooper (movie). The Trailor recreates effectively Heinlens Mobile Infantry Exoskeletal armor.
None of the Protoss units look like any of the C&C3. The closest similarities is comparing a three legged small walker unit to a four legged massive Protoss Colossus. The only thing that bears similarities is the mothership, which is a lame unit, but the protoss mothership looks nothing like any other "mothership".

There is no such thing as something completely unique.

Obviously the space marine and the goliath were ripoffs, but honestly, there aren't a shit ton of directions you can go with a human-like futuristic concept. The protoss, which were the most original of all their races are now succumbing to outside influences; I think thats a mistake. While Starcraft wasn't the most original game in the world, it had a more unique feel than this one is sure to have.

Protoss weren't unique. They're the Predator to the Zerg's Alien. I mean, they took off on a lot of interesting tangents from the original Predator, but really it's just the classic "High-tech alien with shimmering ships and outstanding destructive power." I mean, even the shields are stolen from Independence Day, as is the "Planet Cracker" move they used in the first game to destroy worlds, even though it's now going to be available via Mothership in SC2.

Actually, when you really look at it, the Protoss are a HELL of a lot like the Independence Day aliens, they even LOOK the same, and communicate telepathically. The tentacles that the ID aliens had are just on the backs of the Toss heads, that's all. The physical structure is almost identical too, if you're looking at the true forms of the ID aliens, rather than the big bony exoskeletal warsuits they wore.

Nothing in SC was totally original, and some direct ripoffs are easily detectable, but that's not what makes the game so ownage...it's how they take the best of what's out there, put their own spin on it, and wind up with an amazing game that's obviously been good enough to last almost a decade.

Yeah, they made a game that was good enough for a decade, this one won't be, you heard it here first. Besides that, a high-tech alien race is in every sci fi book, so while the idea is cliche, the units and abilities, which by the way are becoming more mainstream with SC2, were what set it apart. I don't really know what you're trying to say or what else you would expect race-wise. Its the units within the races that make the races unique and ultimately define them. It seems pretty simple to me, there, in every sci fi book/game, is a high tech alien, a primitive alien, and the humans, give or take one of the alien races. Units like the archon, the dragoons, the carrier (which has been removed) and the dark templar are just a few of the awesome modifications to come off the idea. Those units make it unique, those units are what set sc apart.

Personally my problems are with how the actual combat worked out in the videos I've seen. Just... didn't sit right, least of all compared to the original. I'm positive it'll suck, and am honestly not surprised...
